Under the restoration expertise of the Carousel Works, a historic Illions carousel has spun to life to delight riders once again at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, MO.
The vintage, hand-carved carousel was created by Marcus C. Illions in 1926 and is one of only six remaining authentic Illions carousels in the world. It has been in storage since 2007.
In early March 2010, the experienced Carousel Works staff carefully packed and transported the carousel figures and façade to their 22,000 square foot facility located in Mansfield, OH to begin the restoration. Each figure and façade piece of the 64-figure carousel has been expertly restored and hand-painted by the skilled carousel artisans. Once the refurbishment of the carousel is complete, the owner of the carousel, Cedar Fair Entertainment Company in Sandusky, Ohio, planned to reintroduce the carousel at one of its amusement parks. A formal announcement was made in November of 2010 that the restored carousel would be located at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, MO. Previously, the carousel operated at the Geauga Lake amusement park in Aurora, Ohio.
Over the past three decades, Carousel Works has also been involved in the restoration of several of the other few remaining operational Illions carousels including the Heckscher Carousel located in Hempstead Lake Park in W. Hempstead, NY, the Grand Carousel at the Columbus Zoo in Columbus, OH, and the Six Flags New England Carousel located in Agawam, MA.
